Social Responsibility

Social responsibility is at the heart of the NSLC. As a crown corporation, the NSLC is mandated by the Liquor Control Act to control the sale of beverage alcohol in Nova Scotia. This means promoting responsible drinking and more importantly it means keeping beverage alcohol out of the wrong hands.

Responsible retailing starts in-store with NSLC employees diligently checking customers for valid identification. Externally, advertising and social marketing techniques are used to build awareness of issues like binge drinking, buying for minors, fetal alcohol syndrome disorder and planning ahead to get home safely. The NSLC endeavours to strike the balance between fulfilling its social mandate and giving Nova Scotians a great experience shopping for the beverages that enhance their social occasions.

Responsible Consumption

The NSLC is committed to keeping alcohol out of the hands of minors (those under Nova Scotia’s legal drinking age of 19 years) and this is what Nova Scotians have come to expect. NSLC employees use a variety of strategies to help ensure minors do not purchase alcohol in NSLC stores.
