Mother’s Day Breakfast
Mother’s Day takes place on Sunday, May 13, 2012 and provides the perfect opportunity to celebrate motherhood and honour the mothers in your life.
Treating Mom to a special breakfast is a long-standing tradition for Mother’s Day, especially when it features the indulgent practice of enjoying breakfast in bed. This handy checklist will help to ensure that none of the important details are overlooked and you have everything you need for the morning of May 13th.
• Decide on the breakfast menu a few days before.
• Make a list of everything you need to prepare and serve your special breakfast: ingredients, pans, tableware, and serving utensils.
• Don’t forget the tray. It’s an essential element of a comfortable breakfast in bed. If you don’t have a tray, a basket, a large platter, or a shallow box lined with a couple of cloth napkins will work in a pinch.
• Presentation is key. Pull out the nice cloth dinner napkins - the ones that typically only make an appearance at holiday dinners - then roll up a knife fork and spoon, tie with a pretty ribbon, and place the napkin roll on the tray.
• Prepare ahead of time: veggies and meat for omelets can be chopped and bagged; batter for muffins, pancakes, crepes, or scones will do just fine overnight under plastic wrap; and the coffee grounds can sit in the filter, ready for you to simply press the brew button.
And remember, taking these extra special steps will help make the breakfast a very special one for Mom.
Fresh Squeezed Orange juice
Make your own fresh-squeezed juice. An electric juicer makes easy work of this job but for a glass or two, an old-fashioned hand juicer found in most grocery stores will work just fine.
Coffee Just Right
Don’t forget the coffee. Serve her a cup of coffee, made from her favourite roast, just the way she likes it. Take her a hot cup as soon as she’s awake, which will give her time to wake up before you arrive with her breakfast tray.
Breakfast: Her Style
Breakfast can be a simple serving of fruit, yogurt and a muffin, or a hot meal of eggs, toast and bacon. The trick is to think about what the lady of honour likes to eat for breakfast and make this your guide.
Consider Adding a Mimosa
A fresh Mimosa can be a perfect treat for that extra special breakfast. Fill half of a champagne flute with chilled champagne and top off with chilled orange juice, and then stir gently. For added flare, slice up a strawberry to decorate the rim of the flute.
Of course, it doesn’t matter whether the breakfast is full eggs benedict or simple cinnamon toast and cereal; it’s the detailed touches that will make this surprise start-to-the-day so special.
• Garnish the plate with fresh fruit and herbs.
• Have some light reading, like the newspaper or her favourite magazine, beside the tray – Mom probably doesn’t get time all to herself that often.
• Include a small vase or juice glass with a fresh flower. If there isn’t room on the tray for a vase, lay a fresh flower down on the tray between the plates.
