Czech Beer - Pilsner Urquell
Pilsner Urquell (Plzensky Prazdroj) from Czech Republic is very well known beer around the world. Pilsner Urquell was the first “pilsen” type beer in the world, every other pilsen beers brewed around the world are imitations.
Czech “town” had been granted the rights to brew beer back in 1265 by King Premysl Otakar II, (not Good King Wenceslas as is often reported). This original beer was brewed for centuries only in this town because of water which was different from water elsewhere. Pilsen Urquel is a bottom- fermented beer produced since 1842 in Pilsen (Plzen) – Czech Republic. Today it is a prominent brand of the global brewing empire SABMiller, which has also started brewing Czech Pilsner Urquell in Poland and Russia.
Pilsner Urquel is a lager. The term “lager” means “to store” and most lagers are stored for six to eight months. Pilsner Urquell is stored for about two to tree months in six miles of lagering cellers cut under the brewery in Pilsen.
Brew itself is smooth, creamy, light golden color, it has very clear appearance totally refreshing, lightly sparkling and it's flavor is dominated by Bohemian Saaz hops and it is supported by nice hops bitterness . It's thick, white head is supported with a fair amount of effervescence. The aroma is pretty typical Pilsner. It feels soft and full body.
Pilsner Urquell is my favorite beer in the world. Nothing comes close to it. There are also other excellent Czech beers such as Staropramen, Kozel, Budweiser (Budvar Brewery) which is brewed in town Budweis (Budejovice / Czech Republic) and it’s best known as Budweiser in the European Union, Czechvar in the United States and Canada, and either Budweiser or Budejovicky Budvar in the rest of the world. All these beers are widely available almost in every province in Canada but Nova Scotia - I wonder why?
