Spanish white varietals

Increased interest and investment in Spanish whites have done much to bring these Crisp & Light wines out from underneath the shadow of their famous red siblings. Here are some of the most popular white varietals and the perfect food pairings to bring them to life.

VERDEJO

After a long history of being mainly known for Sherry-like wines, Verdejo has been evolving in recent decades. In the Rueda region, they have been producing Crisp & Light white wines with attractive aromas of tropical fruit, fennel and lime zest. Keep the food pairings fresh and simple. A bowl of gazpacho (chilled tomato soup) or simple tapas (Spanish appetizers) makes a great match with these wines.

FOOD PAIRINGS:

Shellfish | Salads | Aperitif

ALBARINO

This grape is mainly grown in Galicia, a cool maritime corner of Spain that is attracting the wine world’s attention. Albarino’s white wines, often made in Rias Baixas DO, tend to be fragrant with fresh, floral, citrus and peach-like aromas. However, the flavours are usually quite dry and boast a lively acidity in the finish. Albarino pairs well with local seafood such as bacalao (cod) either served fresh or salted.

FOOD PAIRINGS:

Calamari | Fresh Cheeses | Shellfish

PARELLADA

Originally from the northeastern region of Catalonia, Parellada is primarily used to make Catalan sparkling wines. Though 95% of all Spanish Parellada harvested go to producing sparkling wines — it’s also the base of some youthful, non-sparkling white blends known for their relaxed, easy-drinking personalities, crisp, dry flavours and refreshing acidity. Lighter versions are great with tapas. Oaked versions can handle more substantial fare such as seafood paella.

FOOD PAIRINGS:

Shellfish | Fresh Cheeses | Aperitif

CHARDONNAY

In Spain, Chardonnay does its best work in Navarra and Penedès, two regions that have long been experimenting with foreign grapes. The best are Rich & Full white wines reminiscent of fine Burgundy. Try a Spanish Chardonnay with roast chicken dusted with pimentón (a Spanish version of smoked paprika).

FOOD PAIRINGS:

Grilled Fish | Lobster | Medium Aged Cheeses
