Port of Wines Specialty Release

It a world filled with fantastic Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio it can be tough for a grape from any other vine to get a little time the spotlight. With all due respect to those aforementioned famous fruit, this release features a number of up-and-coming white grapes such as France’s Aligoté, Itay’s Verdicchio and Austria’s Grüner Veltliner and reds like Spain’s Monastrell, Italy’s Aglianico and South Africa’s Pinotage. Don’t be surprised when spill their secrets into your glass and you discover your new favourite wine.

Bouchard Père & Fils Bourgogne Aligoté

Though considered the second white grape of France’s Burgundy region, Aligoté has always grown in the shadow of Chardonnay – that is until now.  Light, clean and crisp with a fresh, delicately perfumed bouquet, Aligoté has become a popular favourite with both sommeliers and wine aficionados who embrace its refreshing subtleties.

Hammeken Cellars Montgó Monastrell

Monastrell (called Mourvèdre in many other countries) is on of Spain's most wildy planted and, thanks to its balance of complexity and drinkability, favourite grapes. Montgó offers an expressive nose of blueberry, black cherry and cedar wood with nicely incorporated notes of rose petals, licorice and toasted oak. Layered and ripe on the palate with firm tannins.

Uva Pirata Petit Verdot

Originally from France's Bordeaux region, Petit Verdot now calls vineyards around the world home. Spain’s Uva Pirata has an outstanding bright cherry red with violet tones. On the nose its intense aromas of red ripe fruit, red berries, caramel, vanilla and mocha. The entry on the palate is very fruity, elegant, spicy, mineral, full bodied, well balanced and long finish.

Catena Appellation San Carlos Cabernet Franc

Another grape whose origins began in France's Bordeaux region, Cabernet Franc is fast becoming on of Argentina's stars. The wine's nose offers elegant aromas of spices, and fresh herbs as thyme and rosemary, red berries, cassis and raspberries, with layers of cedar. The mouthfeel is full and rich with cassis, raspberries flavors and notes of black pepper and oregano. The finish is bright and fresh with finely grained tannins.

Van Loveren African Java Pinotage

A cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, Pinotage has become South Africa's signature red grape. Van Loveren African Java Pinotage is oak matured, offering vibrant plum and ripe berry fruit on the palate. The wine has an intense aroma of roasted coffee beans followed by a smoky mocha-java aftertaste.

Antinori Prunotto Dolcetto d'Alba DOC

Lighter in body than its arguably more famous cousin Barbera, Italy's Dolcetto is the foundation of some of Piedmont region's most drinkable wines. Soft and supple with a dry, well-balanced red-fruited flavour, this Dolcetto offers all the elegance and subtle pleasing bitterness that defines the grape’s classic character.

Nugan Estate Manuka Grove Durif

Also known as Petite Sirah, Durif is a rich and robust red grape variety that revels in the warm and dry conditions found in Australia. A full-bodied wine, the Manuka Grove offers soft chewy tannins and a youthful fine acid balance with a generous palate of dark cherry and plum pudding with dusty chocolate, earth and spice.

Umani Ronchi Casal di Serra Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore DOC

Indigenous to Italy’s Marche region, Verdicchio’s crisp, dry personality has made it the go-to grape for seafood loving Europeans. Rich and velvety in the mouth, Casal di Serra shows intense and persistent aromas of wild flowers apple and stone fruit ending with a dry, persistent and intensely fruity finish.

Loimer Langenlois Kamptal Grüner Veltliner

Made from Austria’s signature grape this Grüner Veltliner offers inviting aromas of herbs, supported by a peppery spiciness, followed by fresh apple fruit. Racy and crisp on the palate, yet beautifully balanced. Bone dry and refreshing with the classic Grüner herbal character. The lean body makes it an ideal support for starters or simply as a mouth-watering appetizer.

Terredora di Paolo Il Principio Aglianico Irpinia

Southern Italy’s most famous red grape, Aglianico has made a name for itself with its rich, full-bodied wines like Il Principio. Inky red in colour it offers black cherry, wild blackberry and plum fruit flavours with a spicy, toasted overtone. An elegant wine that’s long in the mouth with notes of mature red fruits balanced tannic structure.
