LEED Silver Certification

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is one of the most popular green building certification programs used worldwide. LEED certification provides independent, third-party verification that a building, home or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

We have committed that all new build and renovations will be completed to LEED Silver standards. Our first store to achieve LEED Silver is our Forest Hills store and we’re proud of this accomplishment and recognition.

Energy Investment Program

Reducing energy consumption is a top priority: The utilities consumption in all our stores, Head Office and Distribution Centre are carefully analyzed. This helps us to target efficiency improvements and renovations we can make, and our current projects have us projecting energy savings of over 1.3 million kilowatt hours/year. Our average pay back period for energy investments is 2 years, with projects only green lighted with under 4 year pay backs.

Tapping into Natural Gas

We’re committed to making business decisions based on the principles of sustainability. Natural gas provides an efficient, safe and cost-effective energy solution and is the cleanest of all fossil fuels. We’re proud to use natural gas in both of our Amherst stores and will consider usage of this energy source as it becomes more widely available throughout Nova Scotia.
