The NSLC Encourages Haligonians to Not Drive Impaired with Free Transit Rides

Halifax - November 29, 2023 - As we move into a season of celebration, the NSLC is proud to sponsor a weekend of free rides with Halifax Transit on December 1 and 2, as they ask all Nova Scotians to make getting home safely part of their plans throughout the holiday season and always.

This free-ride weekend is in support of the NSLC’s new responsibility campaign, What are you willing to miss?, which draws attention to the important moments, celebrations, and milestones that could be missed if the choice is made to drive impaired.

“As the responsible retailer of beverage alcohol and cannabis for Nova Scotia, we have a duty to share messages and support opportunities that encourage Nova Scotians to make responsible choices when consuming the products we sell,” says Marley MacDonald, Director, Responsibility and Sustainability. “We care about our people, our communities and our shoppers, and our Safe Ride Program is just one of the ways that we can raise awareness of the importance of having a plan to get home safely and not drive impaired.”

All Halifax Transit services (bus, Access-A-Bus, and ferry) will be free for all passengers on Friday, December 1 and Saturday, December 2, each day from 6 p.m. to end of service.

“Last year’s free fares initiative was a great success with our passengers, and we are pleased to be partnering with the NSLC again this year to provide safe travel during one of the busiest weekends over the holiday season,” says Cheryl Chappel, Manager of Programs & Engagement at Halifax Transit.

This is the second year the NSLC has offered free rides with Halifax Transit in advance of the holidays. Last year, more than 32,000 passengers participated.

Safe Ride Program

This free-ride weekend with Halifax Transit is just one element of the NSLC’s Safe Ride Program, which is offered throughout the year in support of events in communities across the province.
