Potate dauphinoise

 This side dish recipe makes an elegant alternative to mashed potatoes. It can be made a day in advance. Bring to room temperature before reheating.

Ingredients

5 tbsp butter
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups half and half cream
Salt and pepper, to taste
Fresh nutmeg, grated
6  large Yukon potatoes, sliced very thinly (1/8-inch thick slices)
1 cup gruyère cheese, grated
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated

Directions

Preheat oven to 350°F.

In a sauce pan combine the butter, garlic, cream, salt, pepper and nutmeg and bring up to a simmer.

Cover the bottom of a casserole dish with a layer of potatoes and then cover with a layer of cream.

Continue layering until you have used all of your cream and potatoes.

Cover your dish with tin foil and cook for 45 min to 1 hour until potatoes are tender.

Remove the foil, cover with both cheeses and broil until melted and starting to colour.

Let cool before serving.
