Propeller Brewing Company

Over Two Decades of History

Back in the early 1990s, John Allen was busy working in the film industry, as a prop master. Between projects, John was brewing the kind of flavourful beer that he loved and was hard to find in Halifax at the time. Craft beer was a new movement in Canada and John was ready to bring it to Nova Scotia. In 1997 he quit his day job and converted what was previously Wormwood's Dog and Monkey Cinema at 2015 Gottingen St. in Halifax, NS, into Propeller's first craft brewery.

Since then, Propeller has added multiple beers, sodas, and craft cocktails to its line-up. Propeller has moved their main brewing facilities to 617 Windmill Road in Dartmouth, also adding another tap room at 6128 Quinpool Road in Halifax, and transformed the original Gottingen brewery floor into the city's raddest hidden gem, the Propeller Arcade. Also in the works is a new tap room and cold beer store in Bedford.

John still has his finger on the pulse of Propeller, but his son Mike Allen, has taken over as the General Manager of the local family business.

What makes them unique?

Propeller Brewing Company has focused on handcrafted, small-batch beer with time-honoured methods that produce distinct, full-bodied tastes and aromas for over 25 years, making them Nova Scotia’s oldest operating craft brewery.

About their Products

Propeller has something for everyone’s tastes, ranging from IPA’s, to fruit-forward summer beers, and craft cocktails.

Their award-winning brews include Galaxy IPA, the silver medal winner at the 2021 Canadian Brewing Awards for New England style IPA. Galaxy IPA boldly takes you into the delicious dimension of Vermont India Pale Ale, with a hazy, hoppy, and juicy profile that is a favorite among IPA lovers.

Their Azacca Session IPA was the 2020 Canadian Brewing Awards’ silver medalist for the Session Ale category. It showcases the unique Azacca hop with aromas of mango, pineapple, and tangerine. El Dorado and Citra hops add complex layers of melon and stone fruit to this hazy and easy-drinking brew.

If you prefer a mixed drink, Propeller’s Perfect Storm craft cocktail combines the popular spicy tingle of their Ginger Beer with rum and a touch of lime, creating the perfect mix of refreshment.
