Four classic outdoor games

Two girls in potato sacks outside racing

This Labour Day weekend, get outdoors and try one of these four classic games, great for both small or large groups. Classic games are experiencing a real resurgence as fun outdoor activities and they are sure to be a hit at your next get-together. And you can make most of them out of objects you already have around the house. So go ahead, divide your guests into teams and add some competitive fun to your Labour Day celebrations. If you’re feeling especially competitive you can even buy fun trophies or prizes for the winning team(s). If you’re looking for prize options, check out our selection of local wines for lots of great suggestions!

Always remember to be cautious when playing outdoor games. Be sure to drink responsibly and avoid serving alcoholic beverages while games are in play.

1. Potato sack races

Pull a sack up over your legs and hop to the finish line! A large pillowcase will work if potato sacks aren't on hand.

 2. Lawn twister

Use circular stencils and coloured spray paint to create a twister board in the grass. Use a non-toxic paint if you can find one given that bare hands and feet will be all over it!

3. Lawn bowling with recycled soda bottles

Paint some old pop bottles bright colours and fill them with sand to create lawn bowling pins. Any ball you have on hand—volleyball, soccer ball, softball—will do.

4. Flamingo ring toss

Yes, those plastic pink flamingos! Gather a flock of them, stick them in the ground in bowling pin formation and let the ring tossing begin. It’s harder than it sounds to land a ring around one of their pink necks so the further away the flamingo, the more the points scored. You can purchase plastic pink flamingos at your local Home Hardware
