Getting to know Domaine de Grand Pré winery
Nestled in the heart of
Nova Scotia wine country, and host to more than 25,000 visitors each year,
Domaine de Grand Pré is a true gem. Although the winery is Atlantic Canada’s oldest, the estate really began to shine when Swiss-born Hanspeter Stutz and his family re-opened it to the public in 2000. Visitors are treated to a comprehensive wine experience with vineyard tours, wine tastings, a winemaking museum and retail outlet. Their award-winning eatery, Le Caveau, was named “ONE OF 20 WORLD’S BEST WINERY RESTAURANTS” by Wine Access Magazine. And, to top it all off, the winery and its vineyards offer breathtaking views of the beautiful dyke-lands of Grand Pré and the Minas Basin.
Hanspeter’s son, Jurg, helms the winemaking at the estate. He brings five years of winemaking and grape growing study at university in Wädenswil, Switzerland, which included an apprenticeship at a Swiss vineyard. His award-winning approach to the craft is one that extends beyond simply adapting old-world varietals to the local terroir and climate. This fresh perspective led the winery to partner with Agriculture Canada in creating unique Nova Scotia grapes that are perfectly suited to thrive here. The resulting wines are consistently celebrated at award shows and dinner tables alike.
Domaine de Grand Pré offerings include a range of reds, whites, desserts, a rosé and two sparkling varieties.
