As game day host, you want to make sure your guests enjoy themselves as much as possible while watching the hockey game. That means fun food, great drinks and an adequately-sized TV are all up to you. But don’t stop there! If you want to come through for your friends in a big way, push it further than the basics with these decorating ideas. Why not decorate your den (or living room, or wherever your 60” TV lives) to feel like a shrine to Canada’s most beloved past-time? It’s a fun way to add an extra layer of atmosphere to the hockey festivities. Try these 5 decorating ideas for the next big hockey game.
1. Photos of the players
Those photos on the wall of your kids, your family and your friends? Time for them to hit the bench. Print photos of your favourite players, and swap them in the frames now holding your loved ones. Hey, for one night, you love your team just as much. For fun, see how long it takes for your guests to notice the change in lineup.
2. Celebrate your buds
If you and your friends have a rich history of big sporting events together, pull out old photos of the gang in their jerseys and display them along with the players.
3. Wear team colours
You probably don’t have to tell some of your friends to dress for the occasion—many will show up in jerseys. But for those who don’t always think of matching their outfit to the occasion, ask guests to wear the team colours they’re cheering for that night.
4. Bowls of gear
Fill vases or glass bowls with hockey stuff. Pucks, refs’ whistles, maple leafs (if appropriate, of course), or even miniature hockey helmets. Flowers are for another event altogether!
5. Get everyone home safely
Have cab numbers on hand or hire a car for the evening. Alternatively, have the guest room ready for anyone who might need to stay the night. As a good host, ensure you do what you can to help everyone make responsible choices.
