You may or may not have known that ketchup potato chips are a distinctly Canadian indulgence. That’s right, it’s a snack our U.S. friends are not privileged to enjoy without a trip up here to the Great White North. So it’s the perfect treat for cheering on the home team! But why not add a little twist to this traditional snack?

Ingredients

Ketchup popcorn

1/4 cup unsalted butter

1/4 cup homemade ketchup

1 tbsp brown sugar

8 cups popcorn (1/2 cup kernels)

Homemade Ketchup

2 tbsp olive oil

1 small onion, diced

1 carrot, peeled, finely chopped

1 rib of celery, finely chopped

1 28-oz can chopped tomatoes

1 small can tomato paste

Directions

Ketchup popcorn

Start by making a ketchup infused butter by combining unsalted butter, homemade ketchup and brown sugar in a saucepan. Heat over a medium-low heat, stirring to help blend the flavours. When the butter has melted removed from heat. Pour over a large bowl (8 cups) of popcorn. Season generously with salt and toss.

Homemade Ketchup

Place a medium saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the olive oil and sweat the onions, celery and carrots until the vegetables are soft. Add the chopped tomatoes, tomato paste, brown sugar and vinegar. Cook the tomatoes for about an hour or until quite thick. Remove the tomatoes and let cool. Place contents into a food processor or blender and purée until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
