It’s raining, it’s pouring

Keep the rain out and your spirits up.

If the forecast looks gloomy for your camping weekend, don’t call it off just yet. As long as you don’t see any thunder or lightning, there are lots of ways to spend a rainy day without packing the car up and heading home.

First things first, you’ll want to make sure your campsite is ready for rain. That means pitching your tent on high, flat ground and setting up a tarp or rain-fly over top of your sleeping quarters. It’s also a good idea to pack rain-resistant clothing and footwear, as well as raincoats and umbrellas.

And what do you do if the rain comes? You plan for a few indoor activities, such as the following.

Explore your nearest town.

Nova Scotia is full of interesting small towns and villages. Secure your campsite, hop in the car, and go exploring. A rainy day is a great time to check out the sights. Look for local museums, shops or restaurants. You never know what you’ll find.

Go see a movie.

Find a movie theatre within driving distance and catch a matinee. The weather’s always changing. Maybe by the time the movie is over, the sun will be shining.

Take cover.

If you’ve managed to keep your campsite tightly sealed, you might find that your tent is actually pretty cozy in a warm summer rain. Curl up with a good book. Play a board game. Enjoy a drink. A rainy day on the campsite isn’t ideal, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make the most of it.
